 VEMA is believed to be the first totally voluntary 1st response unit of its kind in South Africa. As a 1st response unit the VEMA members respond to any medical emergency call and stabilise the patients prior to the arrival of an ambulance. VEMA is autonomous of all emergency services and other organisations.

 Vema High Angle Rescue Unit (Vema HAR) was started in February 2008 as there was a need for a specialised unit such as this in the area. Due to the fact that the HAR team is composed of specialists that are not dealing with medical emergencies every day they have subsequently formed their own NPO called RescueTech, as of November 2011. VEMAHAR is no longer in operation
